This weekend I felt autumn coming.
We sat outside and played a board game. I had to go and get a jacket because the chill of the air was nibbling a little too much. A few leaves caught my attention, whirling to meet the moss on the lawn.
I made the loveliest, easiest cinnamon apples from Elly Pear. Please make these! They were such a hit in our house. I piled them on a pillow of thick Greek yoghurt. It was heaven.
I went out to announce the readiness of dinner and found my son demanding that my partner throw ‘hundreds of leaves’ over the top of them. Dinner had to wait, of course. If a small child is requesting the absolute joy of crunching autumn leaves and throwing them into the air then most things can wait.
With the approach of autumn, I have been planning a feast to celebrate the equinox. A menu of delicious bowls is taking shape in my mind. Saffron mash, beautifully glossy greens, herb-spiked baked cheese, charred fennel, butternut fritters. They have all been swimming through my mind, vying for a place at the table. We’ll finish with an apple crumble. There can be no doubt about that because, for the first time, the apple trees in my garden have borne fruit.
I also want to write. This liminal time, at the changing of the seasons, tends to find me in a creative energy. That doesn’t necessarily mean productive; my mind flits like a moth. It does mean creativity though; I want to think and let those thoughts out gently.
With that in mind, I have planned an evening of writing to mark the equinox. I would love you to join me. I will offer some nourishing prompts, exploring autumn rituals as creative exercises. You could also enjoy an hour of writing in good company. It’s totally free, on Zoom, and no experience is required. A warm drink and a notebook would be great tools for the hour. If you can light a candle to add a little magic, even better!
